Human rights and security gap analysis for a major miner in Africa
We worked with a major, Africa-focused mining company to help further align their security practices with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHRs). This was in the context of increasing downstream value chain scrutiny (including from automakers), partly driven by the EU CSDDD.
The in-depth, cross-site gap analysis used Forward ESG’s bespoke, score-based VPSHR assessment framework, and was informed by multiple group- and site-level interviews, as well as a forensic document review. This generated insight into each site’s latent security and human rights risk exposure, management proficiency and residual risk exposure – and informed the development of prioritised recommendations to address key gaps.
This included a focus on enhancing Group- and site-level policies, risk assessment processes, training practices, auditing, stakeholder engagement and public reporting. These recommendations will ultimately help the company better manage its underlying risks, deliver stronger cross-value chain assurance and support their longer-term ambitions with respect to the VPSHRs.
